Imagine a society with no art, no literature, no statues, no
paintings, no great works of any kind. Imagine the impact on
the quality of life for the rest of us. Although such a
society sounds far-fetched, it is only through the work of
dedicated individuals and the contributions of many others
that artistic achievement is nurtured and developed. Without
such dedication and contribution, the cultureless society
becomes a reality. New Playwrights Foundation is a 37 years
old non-profit organization that supports the arts through
free seminars and conferences, and most significantly, by
assisting talented emerging writers in producing their plays
and motion pictures. The foundation has been helping artists
for nearly forty years, and through its many
programs and productions, has successfully launched
the careers of many young writers. When New
Playwrights Foundation began its work, the
government strongly recognized the important role
artists play in raising the quality of life for all
of us. Government funding was readily available for
serious talented artists who might not otherwise
have a chance to develop. Over the years, that
funding has eroded. Through government cut backs,
the National Endowment For The Arts and National
Endowment for The Humanities have been stripped
bare. These days, there is an urgent need for
private sector support to maintain the quality of
artistic achievement our country has generated for
generations.
Under the strain of
declining public resources, many organizations like
New Playwrights Foundation have simply vanished.
Fortunately, through the ample generosity of the
private sector and through the tenacity of dedicated
artists, New Playwrights Foundation has continued
its programs and support for the arts without
interruption for over thirty years. Now, NPF is once
again turning to the private sector and asking you
to make a tax deductible donation to help VM
Productions to continue and make very special
movies. This includes one of the most interesting
and original challenges that we're determined to
bring into life: the completion of our
"LITERATURE TO PEOPLE" PROJECT and most
particularly, the completion of its first chapter
"Dostoevsky-LA". "Dostoevsky-LA" deals with cinematographical
adaptations based on three classic masterpieces by
Feodor Dostoevsky ,a writer whose psychological
penetration into the deepest recessions of human
heart had a profound and universal influence on the
20-
century culture. In transporting the essential
elements of Dostoevsky`s prophecies from the 19-th
century Europe to modern-day Los Angeles, we aim to
underscore the universality of the great writer's
tales as well as commonalities of the human
experience. These marvelous stories are ingeniously
adapted to the present day and made current by
including real life struggles, values and issues.
The first chapter of this project - the feature film
"Shades of Day" based upon
White Nights, one of the greatest love stories
ever written, is already completed. Two
complimentary parts of the trilogy "Crime
and Punishment, LA" and "Idiot,
LA" are in advanced stages of development. Once
completed, the Project and accompanying educational
material - being a cultural event in its own right -
will serve as an artistic and educational catalyst
to keep one of the great classic authors present to
an entirely new generation.
